A Brit Abroad

My name is Terry and I'm a 50 something year old dis-enchanted ex-pat Brit living in Cyprus. Why am I dis-enchanted? You'll find reasons enough throughout my tumble log, along with quirky items that amused me and things I think need highlighting, and occasional quotes from some of my favourite novels. Oh, and maybe some original work of my own.

I just saw this on someone else’s blog:

People are so reserved these days. I just don’t understand it, what happened to the sexual liberation of the 60s and 70s or the overt madness that was the 80s?

And it really struck me how young you all are. Gosh, I don’t want to be a downer but…what happened to the sexual liberation of the 60s and 70s? Do you guys not know? AIDS happened. Those of us who were kids in the eighties remember a string of tv specials where minor celebrities told us that if we had sex we would die. As for “the overt madness that was the 80s”…you clearly weren’t there… That idea you have of the eighties in your head, from John Hughes movies and Duran Duran videos, that’s a complete myth. It was nothing like that. Seriously. Certainly, in the UK, the eighties was a time of civil unrest, mass unemployment and really, really, really bad hair. I mean, extremely bad hair…you have no idea.

I’ve noticed this big wave of nostalgia for the 80s recently, this idea that everyone was rich and wore crazy clothes, and the music was all awesome. Now, I love eighties music, but this is not how it was, not at all. A very small amount of people made a LOT of money in the eighties, and there was this myth that the money they made would filter through to the rest of society…it didn’t happen. Those people had giant mobile phones and red braces…they were what we call “wankers”… Those are the same people who caused the financial crisis we’re still suffering from now.

Anyway…rant over.

Couldn’t agree more.
